Delta is located south of Richmond, BC. It is a municipality that forms part of Metro Vancouver which consists of 3 distinct communities: Ladner, Tsawwassen and Ladner. Delta is surrounded towards the north by the Fraser River, to the east by the city of Surrey, and finally to the south, by Point Roberts, Washington, USA.
Delta is situated north of Highway 10, 27km or 17 miles east of Highway 91 and southeast of Vancouver. Delta is 22 km or 14 miles north of White Rock and the USA and Canada border at the Peach Arch crossing.
The area which would be known as Delta was first sighted by Europeans in the year 1791. A Spanish explorer, Lieutenant Francisco Eliza, mistook the area to be an island and called it Isla Capeda. In 1879, the current name of Delta was given to the municipality.
It was the 1858 Gold Rush, along with the creation of the Colony of British Columbia which initially attracted settlers to the region. The Ladner brothers, Thomas Ellis and William Henry of Cornwall, England were traveling through on their way to the gold fields when they saw the potential for agriculture in the rich soils from the delta of the Fraser River. They resolved to some day go back to the area. In 1868 they returned and claimed the land lying at the head of the Chilukthan Slough. During the year 1859, James Kennedy had pre-empted acreage on the south bank of the Fraser within the northern portion of Delta and near New Westminster.
The economic base of the Delta communities have conventionally been fishing and farming. Salmon was first canned commercially on the Pacific Coast near Annieville. The first cannery was established by James Deas in 1873 on present day Deas Island. By the year 1879, Ellis Ladner opened a cannery at the north end of Chilukthan Slough. Next, he managed the Wellington Cannery situated near Westham Island.
The fertile, flat land in Delta made it among the most vital agricultural areas within Metro Vancouver. Most of this land is preserved by the Agricultural Land Reserve regulations so as to prevent its conversion to suburban development or housing. Likewise located in North Delta is the Burns Bog. This is 10,000 acres or 40 square kilometers of natural wetlands which are abundant with wildlife.
Tsawwassen lies south of Delta, along with the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal From this location, ferries travel across the Strait of Georgia and transport visitors to the Gulf Islands and Vancouver Island. Traveling via ferry offers a fantastic journey through beautiful islands and over clear water. On a sunny day it is possible to view seals, bald eagles and likewise killer whales!
