Mission is a district municipality in the Province of British Columbia, located on Highway 7, the Lougheed Highway, 70 km or 44 miles east of Vancouver. The core was first called Mission City. The city is located on Fraser River's north bank and overlooks Abbotsford City. Together, the city of Abbotsford and Mission form part of the Central Fraser Valley. With a population in 2006 of 34,505 Mission is the 23rd largest municipality in British Columbia.

MIssion City sits in between the Coast Mountains and the Fraser River north of Abbotsford. The name "Mission" originates from the Pacific Northwest's first and biggest mission. Founded in 1861, the Roman Catholic St. Mary's Indian Mission is the namesake of the city.

Mission City was a well-known stopping place for river travelers, settlers and trappers, so much so that it was referred to as the Gateway to the Fraser River. Even nowadays, Mission City remains an essential junction. In the year 1895, when the first site became part of the CPR or Canadian Pacific Railway, the mission was moved. The convent and church and the school were built at what is presently the Fraser River Heritage Park.

Mission City is a perfect location for anyone who enjoys the recreational outdoors. The area is bounded by streams, hills, forests and lakes. It comprises 32 parks, a couple of golf courses and dozens of biking and hiking trails, making it an outdoor heaven. The city is radiant with community spirit and takes much pride it its heritage.

Agriculture, forestry and hydroelectricity are the main resource sectors within the area which provide the foundation for various service and connected retail activities. Over the last few years the manufacturing sector has expanded beyond sawmilling and food processing due to transportation improvements.

The manufacturing sector has been dominated by forest related and wood businesses. There has been an emphasis on shingle and red cedar shake mills. Mission City holds the only licensed municipal tree farm in British Columbia also.

The agriculture within the area is mostly found in a narrow belt along the Fraser River. East of Mission, the unincorporated Dewdney-Deroche district has the majority of farms within the region. There are approximately 96 commercial and hobby farms in this location. Dairy is the chief agricultural enterprise, whereas other income sources comprise vegetables, hogs, poultry and beef.

Abbotsford City, lies south of Mission across the Fraser River. This region is amongst the better agricultural areas within the province. The soil fertility has helped dub Abbotsford as the Raspberry Capital of Canada and it has become a popular place to homestead for people who wish to farm.

Maple Ridge is a quiet pastoral community located west of Mission. This community is nestled on the north bank of the Fraser River below the Blue Mountain. Maple Ridge has well preserved a lot of their First nations and pioneer history.
