The city of Terrace is considered to be the oldest always occupied part of the world, as it was densely populated long before the Europeans settled in the region. The Kitsumkalum and the Kitselas are two of the seven Tsimshian tribes in the Terrace area, and its traditional economy consisted of trade, fishing, and hunting. The riverboats that before operated for 22 years within the region came to a stop and was replaced by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. Initially, it was named "Littleton" in honor of George Little, who donated 47 acres to the Grand Pacific Railway. Then again, since there was already a Littleton in New Brunswick, the name was changed to "Terrace" in reference to its geography.

Now, there are numerous attractions in the area meant for both visitors and residents to get pleasure from. Operating form the months of May to October at its George Little Memorial Park location is the Skeena Valley Farmer's Market. Another attraction is the previous home of the town's founder, George Little, which is a two-story heritage home. It is easy to see within downtown Terrace, and many are encouraged to visit the place. The house also has a small gift shop which features local artists. The house also operates as the VIA Rail Station. The Greater Terrace Beautification Society is a group of local volunteers who are devoted to making the Terrace area a lot more charming. The Society meets every first Monday of each and every month. The Heritage Park Museum is operated by the Terrace and District Museum Society and considered a Municipal Heritage Site. The REM Lee Theatre is the largest performing arts venue within the city of Terrace. The Terrace Art Gallery is a non-profit and public facility that is committed to the promotion of the community's visual arts for the past 25 years. The Terrace Public Library is free of charge for all the residents of Terrace, Rosswood, Thornhill, New Remo, Old Remo, Copperside, Usk, Jackpine Flats, and all the Chimdemash communities within the east.

Terrace City has been called the "Cedar Pole Capital of the World," with more than 50,000 poles manufactured here. These poles are utilized for electric power and telephone poles all around numerous areas of North America. The tallest poles made here could be seen in the city of New York. In modern times, the economy, which only depended on logging and large businesses have become a lot more diversified. It is presently more independent and separate from big industries and businesses, and it boasts of a balanced economy which can deal with any type of economic cycle recession effectively.
